Unleash your inner GOAT at CrankChaos 2019

The acronym GOAT – Greatest of All Time – gets thrown around rather casually these days. Not many people can truly claim to be a GOAT in mountain biking, but those who can attend CrankChaos.

Who are these GOATs? And what were they doing? Well, high up in the rugged mountains of the Basotho Kingdom, if you follow the shredded trail of dirt and rubber up the winding paths at Afriski Mountain Resort, at the very peak you’ll find yourself at the start line of the most unique MTB festival in Southern Africa, CrankChaos. The likes of  Tim Bently, Johan Potgieter, Andrew Neethling, and Theo Erlangsen are just a few GOATs that roamed wild at CrankChaos last year. What’s more, returning in 2019 is none other than the one and only GOAT himself, South African downhill legend, Greg Minnaar.

What is CrankChaos all about?

CrankChaos is a mountain biking festival extraordinaire that takes place at the majestic Afriski Mountain Resort, situated in the heart of the Drakensberg-Maluti Mountains in Lesotho, from 31 October – 3 November 2019. CrankChaos, one of the most unique biking events on the continent, is quickly establishing itself as the ultimate test for enduro and gravity riding. It also features some of the biggest and most experienced names on the Southern African riding scene.

What’s on Offer?

CrankChaos includes several epic mountain biking events throughout the weekend that allow riders to test every facet of their skills. The event brings together the biggest brand names in mountain biking while allowing riders to test and rate the equipment on a network of trails surrounding Afriski Mountain Resort.

For 2019, we’ve completely removed the cages. The XCO eliminator is no more. The infamous “Avalanche” has undergone a refresh and is now known as the Strava Challenge. This challenge includes the Goldilocks trail and thigh-burning Black Mountain Pass. Dominating completely, seven-time Xterra winner Conrad Stoltz, took the top of the leaderboard for the Avalanche and Goldilocks Strava Challenges in 2018.

CrankChaos has fast become a staple on the Southern African mountain     biking calendar. It’s the best test of any gravity and enduro junkies’ skills against their MTB idols. Make sure you get your hands on your CrankChaos 2019 package, and you too can pit yourself against the Greatest of All Time.

Keep two hands on the handlebars and head to the official CrankChaos website to book your spot or follow us on the CrankChaos Facebook page or Afriski Mountain Resort Facebook page for news, competitions and more.

Competition / Racing Formats

Downhill Eliminator – R300

This is not a race against the clock. It is a true challenge and requires not only technical skills, but also stamina. Four riders, each on a separate downhill run of equal distance, race to be the first through the holeshot. Navigation of berms, jumps and bridges up the ante – and the excitement. The rider with the fastest finish is crowned the Eliminator. There can only be one, who will it be?

Enduro – R300

As the name suggests, this is the ultimate test of endurance. A combination of altitude and technical downhill trails makes this one of Southern Africa’s toughest races. With a compulsory 400m ascent to the start of the first stage, fitness levels are tested early. Fortunately, the ascents to stages two and three are made via the ski lift and give riders a chance to catch their breath and work out the best lines for their upcoming runs.

Whipp Off– R200

CrankChaos is perfect for a variety of riders. Our slopestyle event is proudly hosted by Kapoko Snow and Bike Park, which during the winter months is transformed into a snowboarder’s dream. However, with a few additional summer variations, the Bike Park becomes the ideal playground for any dirt-jump enthusiast and will truly test a rider’s skills. Whipp Off competitors are judged on technicality, amplitude and off-course style. The title of King of the Mountain is awarded to the rider with the highest scores. Further event details will be made available shortly.

Hill Climb – R100

The rules of the CrankChaos Hill Climb are simple. As the name suggests, this event dares riders to race directly uphill in the fastest possible time. Should a rider’s feet stay grounded just a little too long, they are automatically disqualified. Three, two, one – ride!

Dual Slalom – R150

What better way to increase the difficulty level than to host the event at night? Afriski’s main ski slope will be styled as a slalom course, with the addition of berms. Riders are invited to participate in the knock-out format, racing in pairs until only one winner remains. Naturally, the Dual Slalom winner takes all.

The Strava Challenge – R200

This brand-new race is guaranteed to blow your hair back. The event is 12km of downhill single track on the newly cut Goldilocks trail. This trail is known to be particularly tight and overtaking will require skill, so pick your riding buddies well and make sure you get that head start. Pushing and shoving won’t get you to the podium because this is a race against the clock. Although the trail is predominantly downhill, it will nevertheless take grit to win it. It’s all about earning the Strava King of the Mountain title.
